Suspension & sprituality

Hello All,

I am doing an expository essay for my Psychology class at University of Phoenix. The topic of my essay is the spiritual side of suspension. I have read a lot of material on the subject but I am looking for some first hand information on the reasons one would seek out to become involved. My hope is to educate and show that the judgements most of the population make based on physical appearence is not only wrong but untrue as well. I realize there are many different reasons one might seek out to become involved in this practice, but I am mainly interested in the spiritual or mental growth that one feels from engaging in the suspension itself.

Are the main reasons spiritual or are there other mental or physical drives in play? I am heavily pierced myself but to be honest the idea of hanging from hooks scares the shit out of me.

I am not looking to ridicule or pass any sort of judgements; but I really want to show others that beyond the shock value that most of society sees; and judges on, that there are deeper and more meaningful motivations behind this practice.

I would truly appreciate any input that can be provided. Please let me know if it is okay to quote your responses; and if you would like a copy of my completed essay I will be more than happy to provide one to you.

Thank you , Michael Dionysius

  1. My motives were mostly to experience the unknown, push my body and mental boundaries, and to possibly experience a mind/body spirituality I did not know.

  2. I described the motivation in my experiences. The feeling of floating freely in the air, the adventure, the feeling of metal becomeing a quasi-body-part
